This beautiful Vincent Van Gogh paperweight Irises features his iconic work produced in 1889, found at the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Dutch Post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh produced his iconic work Irises while interned at an asylum in Saint-Rèmy, France after a self-mutilation episode. While interned at the Asylum in Saint-Rèmy Van Gogh produced over 130 paintings, making it the most prolific period during his artistic career. The Irises represented in the work were inspired by those found in the garden at the asylum, and the work’s color vibrancy, unmodulated areas of color, and overflowing border attribute their influence to Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, such as those produced by the artist Katsushika Hokusai. An extremely influential artist, Vincent van Gogh’s influence is evidenced throughout the history of art, impacting artists from artistic movements such as Abstract Expressionism, and Neo-Expressionism, among others. Van Gogh’s important artistic influence is indebted to his use of expressive, divisionist brushwork and vibrant colors in his palette. Even though Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime to his brother Theo, today Van Gogh’s works are among the best selling artworks in the art market. Van Gogh is known for producing one of the world’s most immediately recognizable works “Starry Night” (1889) found at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
