Description

Hope II (Woman Expecting Child) (1907-1908). The second painting entitled "Hope II" was first shown to the public in 1909 in the Klimt room of the second Kunstschau. The first painting--which had been withdrawn from the retrospective Secessionist's exhibition for obscenity six years earlier--was also on show there. At the time, Klimt had the following to say about the painting. "Everything is ugly, she is and what she sees, yet inside her grows beauty, hope. And her eyes express that." The title refers to the German expression 'in guter hoffnung' (in good hope), which refers to a woman being pregnant. In both paintings death plays a role - literally being in the background - which is hardly surprising if you take Klimt's painful recent experience into account. The second son he had with his model Marie Zimmerman died at just four months old.
Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter who was considered to be particularly controversial during his time. Klimt "main subject in his work was the female body. He became known for the highly decorative style and erotic nature of his works, which were seen as a rebellion against the traditional academic art of his time. Klimt was a prominent member of an innovating group of artists called "˜Sezession' and is considered to be one of the main pioneers of modern art. Apart from this, his ornamental Jugendstil style evokes an irresistible feeling which is inspired by the "˜fin-de-siecle' of 19th century Vienna: elitist, liberal middle class, decadent, pleasantly-decorative. Klimt Combined monumental style with Byzantine-like ornamental art and classical symbolism, created against the background of romanticism which was so characteristic of his time. His work was criticized for being too sensual and erotic, although they've proven today to be some of the most memorable paintings to ever emerge from the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt "Golden Phase" is quite possibly his most widely recognized period of art. This period emerged following positive reactions to his work and subsequent financial success. Many of his paintings during this time, including The Kiss, were made with gold leaf.
In Sezession's own words: Art guides us to an ideal realm, the only place where we will be able to find pure joy, pure happiness and pure love. A choir of angels from paradise. Joy given by divine sparkles. That kiss from the entire world!"

Klimt

Gustav Klimt was a controversial Austrian symbolist painter during his time. Klimt’s main subject in his work was the female body and the beauty of femininity. Art community heavily criticized his art for being too sensual and erotic. Today, they’ve proven to be some of the most memorable paintings ever to emerge from the Vienna Secession movement. He furthered and advocated for the Art Nouveau movement (also known as Jugendstil in Germany). Eventually, he remains one of the most talented decorative painters of the 20th century. Klimt’s “Golden Phase” is quite possibly his most widely recognized period of art. This period emerged following positive reactions to his work and some financial success. The Golden Phase period included a large variety of paintings created with gold leaf in their production. Many of his works during this time, were very popular due to, in part, this utilization of gold with paint. While Klimt never saw much merit or fame from his work during his life, he has reached immortality in death and has greatly influenced the art community after his passing. Musart is proud to showcase the work of such a genius pioneer, who was incredibly important to the ongoing conversation of the art community as a whole.
