About Birth of Venus Painting
Sandro Botticelli, the artist behind The Birth of Venus and Italian Renaissance expert, portrays the goddess of love, also known as Venus, being born from the sea foam and blown into the west wind as she covers herself with her blond hair. In this painting, unlike his previous work Primavera (ca. 1482), Botticelli depicted Venus as nude, which was very rare for artists during the middle ages. The theme of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus derives from a poem by Angelo Poliziano, a leading humanist of the day. This painting today is found at the Galleria Degli Uffizi in Florence.
