After working fifteen years as Auguste Rodin "assistant, and receiving encouragement from him, he produced some stunning works such as the Polar Bear shown at the 1922 Salon d'Automne and left nearly 300 pieces to the French state. To this day, François Pompon may be considered an influential forerunner of modern sculpture. Pompon worked on the subject of owls between 1918 and 1923.
