About François Pompon Owl Sculpture (1923) - Small
This statue is a perfect replica of one of Pompon "most well-known pieces, la Chouette (the Owl"), 1923. The nineteenth and early twentieth century French Sculptor and animalier François Pompon known for his simplistic animal sculptures. After working fifteen years as Auguste Rodin "assistant, and receiving encouragement from him, he produced some stunning works such as the Polar Bear shown at the 1922 Salon d'Automne and left nearly 300 pieces to the French state. To this day, François Pompon may be considered an influential forerunner of modern sculpture. Pompon worked on the subject of owls between 1918 and 1923. As it is evident in this resin Pompon Owl Sculpture (1923) resin reproduction covered with a bronze finish, the artist stylized the rendering of the animal by smoothing the body and eliminating all details from its representation, thus emphasizing the immobility of the animal’s pose. Various Pompon owl sculptures were produced in several materials such as wood, plaster, and bronze, often either covered with a green or black patina. In 1926, Pompon would return to the theme of owls, but this time in relief and taking flight. He produced numerous animal statues that were admired by many for both their formal beauty and inoffensive simplicity. François Pompon although mostly unknown during the course of his artistic career, upon his death in 1933, he left behind more than 300 works thus attesting to his prolific artistic career. Pompon made significant contributions to the progression of modern sculpture, the subtle and intricate character of his animal sculptures solidify him as one of the prominent figures in the realm of sculpture in modern art.
