Degas created the original ballerina statue in 1881. His model was Marie van Goethem, a young student of the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris. With his Little Dancer sculpture, Degas introduced unusual mixed materials and broke with academic practices in his days. The statue was made of colored wax and adorned with real hair and a fabric costume.
