About the Big Red Bust

This Big Red Bust is part of our exclusive collection of statues at the Musart Boutique, inspired by Modigliani's original oil on canvas (1913) ©Modigliani Foundation. Modigliani "first name was Amedeo, literally the one who loves God." Certainly, he loved women"”a lot. In the years 1911 to 1913, he explored sculpture, creating a series of geometric heads in stone, inspired by African masks. Because of poor health, he soon abandoned the labor of direct carving, but it resurfaced in Female Big Red Bust, along with memories from the art of the past. Amedeo Modigliani's work and style can be immediately recognized because of his extraordinary interpretations of the human face, maintaining his individuality through the typical elongation of shapes. His works were not received well during his lifetime but later found acceptance. The statue makes a perfect statement for Art lovers alike or people who love decorative items.

The Artist

Modigliani

Amedeo Modigliani grew up in Livorno, Italy as the fourth child of a Jewish family. He was particularly close to his mother, who indulged the young kid's passion for art. By the time he was 14, she enrolled him with the best painting master in Livorno, Guglielmo Micheli. In 1906, Modigliani settled in Paris where he attended the Académie Colarossi. He found inspiration in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georges Rouault, Pablo Picasso, and particularly Paul Cezanne's work. In 1909, Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi introduced Modigliani to African sculpture and since then, this new influence impacted his art. For reinvigorating the practice of portraiture, Modigliani’s work remains one of the most significant and original of his time.
