About Middle Finger Gnome Key Ring - Red

This surprising key ring features a typical garden gnome in an unconventional shape. Indeed, the gnome makes the F-word gesture with his right hand while smiling and having his left hand in the pocket. Hörl gave the garden gnome a sense of rebel personality as he smiles when raising his F-word finger. Sculptor edited the F-word gnome in blue first for "Rolling Change" installation in Seligenstadt (1994), Germany. Now the swearing gnome exists in a range of three colors.

About the Art

The Middle Finger Gnome by Ottmar Hörl originally formed part of a 1994 Seligenstadt installation where an installation of 1000 blue garden gnomes was distributed all across the city. They were then left to themselves. Then, they remained until someone took them. As a consequence, the total population of gnomes slowly disappeared, and it was one of the goals of the overall project. For Hörl, as the project belongs to the public, there is no change of ownership. Removing the object is just a change from one position to another in the meaning of the “Rolling Change”.

After Seligenstadt, the blue gnome installation went to the Art Amsterdam – Art Rai (2006) and then the Maisenbacher Art Gallery Trier in Berlin.

HÖRL

Ottmar Hörl was born in 1950 in Nauheim, Germany. He is a notable German artist, art professor, and writer. Not only Hörl studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt (1975 / 1978), but also at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf (1978 / 1981). In 1985 he co-founded the group Fomalhaut, with architects Gabriela Seifert and Götz Stöckmann. In 1999, Hörl became Professor of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. Eventually, he has been president of the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg since 2005. A mischievous artist, Hörl’s career has been predominantly about creating public commentary. He used his whimsical sculptures that have a friendly and teasing tone, especially with his gnomes. His work Flying Change staged in Selignstadt in 1994, for instance, placed a thousand blue garden gnomes, smiling and brandishing their middle fingers, all around the city. The intended effect was for the public to take them and move them around, which the townspeople gratefully did. Add a touch of “trendy activism” in your home or garden decor with Hörl’s gnome statues. They are suitable for inside and out and are all engraved with Sculptor signature as part as a Special Edition Collection.
