About Van Gogh - Mug - Starry Night (1889)
A reproduction of Van Gogh "beloved masterpiece The Starry Night, 1889, is featured on this ceramicĀ mugĀ from the MoMA "collection.
The Starry Night is an oil on canvas painting by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June, 1889, it depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-RƩmy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941,and is regarded as among Van Gogh "finest works, and one of the most recognized monuments in the history of Western culture.
Van GoghĀ began to draw as a child, and continued to draw throughout the years that led up to his decision to become an artist. He did not begin painting until his late twenties, completing many of his best-known works during the last two years of his life. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketches, and prints. After years of painful anxiety and frequent bouts of mental illness, he died aged 37 from a gunshot wound, generally accepted to be self-inflicted.
