As part of Musart's original collection, we are thrilled to introduce the exclusive limited edition of 100 Amadeo Modigliani Skateboard Polyptych (set of 5), featuring his renowned masterpiece, Nu Couché (1917-1918). This extraordinary artwork achieved great acclaim when it was sold at Christie's auction house on November 9, 2015, for a staggering $170.4 million. The painting was acquired by Chinese billionaire investor and art collector Liu Yiqian for the Long Museum in Shanghai, co-founded by Mr. Yiqian and Mr. Wang Wei.
In the tradition of representing reclining nudes, Amadeo Modigliani created this series of female nude works for Léopold Zborowski, intended for display in his first and only solo exhibition at Galerie Berthe Weill in Paris. The raw and unidealized portrayal of Modigliani's female nudes, exhibited in one of the gallery's windows, caused such a stir that a crowd gathered outside, eventually leading authorities to demand the immediate closure of the exhibition.
While Modigliani's reclining nude posture evokes quintessential masterpieces like Titian's Venus of Urbino (1534), the rough impasto paint application and the unadorned representation of the nude, including underarms and pubic hair, bear striking similarities to works such as Edouard Manet's Olympia (1863). Modigliani's Nu Couché stands as a true masterwork of Modern Art, embodying the struggle of modern artists to demythologize the female nude and challenge other art historical traditions. Its purpose is to provide the spectator with an unadorned, honest representation of the subject.
With Musart on Decks, we aim to celebrate the fusion of artistic traditions and contemporary culture, offering a unique collection that brings these masterpieces to a wider audience. These limited edition skateboard polyptychs, featuring Modigliani's Nu Couché, serve as a testament to the power of art to transcend boundaries and ignite conversations.
