About the Explosion mug

What a better way to start a booming day than with this colorful Explosion mug! The porcelain mug showcases stunning colorful artwork from Lichtenstein's Explosion from Portfolio 9, 1967, which is in MoMA's collection. Explosion mug is made of Asian porcelain and features a high-end replica of the original artwork on its side. The painting is, indeed, a remarkable representation of artist's mastery of the Ben-day dots techniques in several shades of vivid colors.

More about Lichtenstein and Ben-day dots technique

Ben-day dots printing technique consists in overlapping transparent dotted sheets in different colors to create shades, secondary colors or nice illusion effects. Roy Lichtenstein as an emblematic contributor to the Pop Art movement excelled in the use of Ben-Day dots in many of his artworks. His art is essentially inspired by 20th-century commercial styles and printing processes. He mixed Ben-day dots technique, use of stencils, primary colors, and comic books spirit to create something new and accessible to anyone. He finally imposed his own and unique hand-made Pop style art.

Explosion mug features one of the most famous paintings of Lichtenstein.

Roy Lichtenstein is one of the prime contributors to the Pop Art movement. Lichtenstein art essentially paved the way for more commercial styles of art to flourish by blending the “low” and “high” forms of art and create something new. Using comic books and advertisements as inspiration, he reimagined pop culture through a highly skilled and critical lens. Lichtenstein eventually established his own and very unique voice. One of his most effective pieces, Whaam! is a stellar example of his ability to imagine stunning works of art. Whaam! is energetic and also features his ability to create a consistent and well-composed image. The diptych has an expressive power and remains a fantastic piece of work. Lichtenstein art achieved success worldwide, yet would still often be criticized for his methods and choices of subject matter. Despite this, he remains seen as a definitive example of the Pop Art movement and a master artist in his own right.
