Description
Introducing an exclusive limited edition of 100 Salvador Dali Skateboard Triptychs, part of Musart's original collection Musart on Decks. This extraordinary collection features Dali's iconic masterpiece, Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln (Homage to Rothko), created in 1976. The painting, executed in oil and collage on canvas, is aptly described by its explicit and lengthy title.
Upon close examination, the viewer is greeted by the image of Gala, Salvador Dali's wife, with her back turned, gazing towards the rising sun over the Mediterranean Sea. Dali portrays a vision of Christ ascending into heaven, seen from an aerial perspective, with Christ's head represented as the glowing sun. The heavy impasto application adds texture and depth to the artwork. As we step back, we discover that the area of the sky behind Gala takes the shape of a cross. Just as the title suggests, when viewed from a distance of twenty meters, the shapes and small color fields surrounding Gala and the background of the artwork transform into a portrait of Abraham Lincoln.
Dali created this work as a homage to the leading Abstract Expressionist artist Mark Rothko, who initially explored surrealism in the early stages of his career. Rothko eventually moved away from figurative art, delving into color-field, value relationships, and basic geometric shapes to explore the sublime and immersive experience of art. Dali's use of multiple blocks of colors, progressing in varying hues and culminating in a dark perimeter, evokes the meditative color fields found in Rothko's works.
Scholars have interpreted the references to Gala's beauty, the crucified image of Christ, the portrait of the assassinated American president Abraham Lincoln, and the homage to Mark Rothko (who tragically took his own life) as reflections on life, beauty, art, and mortality. Dali's masterpiece invites contemplation and prompts us to delve into the profound connections between these themes.
With Musart on Decks, we are honored to offer this exclusive Salvador Dali Skateboard Triptych collection, allowing art enthusiasts and skateboarders to engage with the intricate symbolism and artistic brilliance of Dali's work.
